The November Garden

November is the month when most plants become dormant, and shut down for the winter. There are though some plants that will begin to flower, and will be in bloom throughout the winter months, such as Viburnum. These plants in particular are known for their sweet fragrance and bright flowers, giving you colour even in the dark winter months.

November is a good time to plant trees and shrubs, and if you have been having a ramble round the garden making notes, you may have identified plants that need to be moved. November is ideal as there is still some warmth in the soil left from the summer. Larger plants are best moved first, with as much soil around the roots as possible.

At this time of year bare root stock of most deciduous trees and shrubs will become available, and can be planted throughout the dormant season. Tree peonies especially like the colder ground when you plant them, their bare roots establish and thrive in very cold ground.

You can still also plant Spring Flowering Bulbs in November, even if the ground is a bit colder. Tulips especially can be planted in early November and still be in flower in the Spring/Summer.
